NYC Guide

This is a collection of favorite places and stuff to do in NYC. I lived in NYC for about 11 years before moving to europe in 2006, although I return frequently to visit friends and family. I often get asked by europeans “what to do in NYC?”. So I’ve compiled some of my favorite places to go.

Lower East Side

Katz’ Deli

205 E Houston St

A fantastic source of classic NY sandwiches. Definitely try the Pastrami (with mustard and kraut). My personal favorite is beef brisket sandwich. The hot dogs are amazing as well.

When you get in, they hand you a ticket. Carry it with you and move to the different food areas. They write the totals on the ticket, you pay in the end.

Tiny’s Giant Sandwich Shop

129 Rivington St.

Really nice variety of tasty fresh sandwiches and great salads. Cozy atmosphhere.

Cocoa Bar Cafe

21 Clinton Street

Great place to hang out, code or meet freelancers. Good power and WIFI. They also have nice chocolate desserts, and red wine, which makes for a nice evening spot.

Local 138

138 Luldow Street

A good typical NY bar. Gets really busy on the weekends. Nice beer selection.

Lil’ Frankies

19 1st Ave.

Great fresh pizza. Try the little meatballs, or pizza with lots of salad on it.

West Village

Village Vanguard

178 7th Ave south

Classic Jazz, in a tiny room. Don’t miss the Monday Night Orchestra. A real gem, so worth a visit, even for the intimate audio experience alone.

John’s Pizza

278 Bleeker St.

Classic NY Pizza, thin and tasty.

Umami Burger

Amazing burgers, made with incredible care and attention to detail. The super-thin fries are also awesome.

432 6th Ave.

Soho

Pepe Rosso to Go

149 Sullivan St.

Great Italian food to go. Perfect for a lazy dinner or lunch in the park.

Apple Store Soho

103 Prince St.

Small and very busy. One of the original stores.

Camper Shoes

125 Prince St.

Great shoes.

Brooklyn Industries

801 Broadway

Nice hoodies, t-shirts, and generally cool clothes that are well-made.

Elsewhere

B&H Photo Video

9th Ave & 34th St

The best place for camera and audio gear. Amazing prices and selection. Nice used offerings as well. Huge place.

J&R Music Store

1 Park Row, Lower Manhattan

Incredible selection of computer, camera, and music stuff. Good prices, huge place.

Bryant Park

42nd st and 5th ave

Great atmosphere, lots of good events happen in the summer here. Chess, chairs, fountains, trees. Busy city all around.
